Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) technology enables computers to form an understanding of a piece of text, Web pages, e-mails, voice, documents, people and images automatically without the need for labour intensive categorisation or intensive searching that relies heavily on text matching, boolean logic and human intervention.

IDOL analyses information based on its content by identifying patterns of words and ideas, as well as determining their relative importance to individual users. It also takes into account the context in which terms appear. This eliminates many false hits while also catching documents that may not contain the specific term, but do include the concept.

Built into the ZANTAZ EAS archiving solution, IDOL serves as a platform for understanding the meaning and significance of email, files and SharePoint content. Additional functionality can be seamlessly integrated in order to perform advanced operations on that data.
