Targeting Learning Using Microsoft 365 Groups

Technical Support

There are several solid examples and trends showing that organisations are increasingly betting on Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) not just for authentication, but as a platform to drive and influence other parts of their operations.

This is a direction underpinned by Microsoft’s investment in features like Lifecycle Workflows, identity governance, and external identity management, which position Entra ID as a central ‘orchestration hub’ rather than just a directory.

For example,

  • Microsoft’s very own Digital Security team switched off something called SailPoint IIQ (an Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) solution) and moved fully to Entra ID Governance, allegedly saving them over $1.5m a year. Read more>
  • Places Teams Guidance was introduced to help line managers coordinate and communicate with their teams about ‘in office days’. Microsoft has since retired the feature, opting instead to use existing Microsoft 365 Groups – reinforcing the central role of groups in driving organisational processes. Read more>
  • Microsoft Entra ID’s Lifecycle Workflows provide built-in support for automating joiner, mover, and leaver scenarios – tasks such as HR-driven provisioning (via syncing with HRIS), adding or removing users from groups, assigning or revoking access, sending notifications, and executing custom workflows. Driving Learning Using Group Membership

So if, like many organisations, you’re already using Entra ID Groups to manage access and permissions, you’re in good company – and you’ll benefit from a streamlined, well-supported platform that you can build on for other applications – such as targeting learning.

For example, using Learn365, the learning management system for Microsoft 365, line managers can use existing Microsoft Teams (Microsoft 365 Group) membership as the basis for enrolment into training.

This is handy as it means line managers (if they’re a owner of a Team) can determine who’s part of a Team, without relying on the IT team to make changes in Entra ID.

What if your EntraID Groups aren’t ‘Up to Snuff’?

For many organisations, EntraID is work in progress: It’s all good in theory but it’s not fully updated to represent all your different groups.

No problem. When it comes to our Microsoft LMS – there’s other approaches you can use in the meantime. Check out this article that explains what you can do instead (or at least in the meantime whilst your EntraID is being built).
