Learning Management

Viva Learning VS Learning Management Systems

What is Microsoft Viva Learning?

Part of the Microsoft Viva employee experience platform (XP) – Viva Learning is a centralised learning hub within Microsoft Teams that seamlessly integrates learning and skill-building into your workforce’s daily routine.

In Viva Learning, your teams can discover, share, recommend, and learn all without leaving Microsoft Teams.

The learning content available in Viva Learning can include your company’s own training courses as well as training from various third-party resources, such as LinkedIn Learning, Microsoft Learn, Pluralsight, Go1, Coursera, Skillsoft, and more.

Is Viva Learning a Learning Management Solution (LMS)?

In a nutshell, no.

Viva Learning is great at surfacing learning content in Teams, and can even make recommendations on relevant training using AI in Microsoft Graph, but it does not do what a learning management system does.

You will still need a learning system to monitor progress with assigned learning.

A dedicated LMS provides many other services that enable organisations to manage training content, assign it to learners, track their progress, and assess their learning outcomes.

For example, an LMS allows you to ensure compliance with certifications that your workforce needs to maintain annually.

An LMS also typically includes features such as content authoring tools, testing and assessments, reporting, analytics, and management functions.

Discover an LMS that Integrates with Viva Learning

Learn365 is an LMS that’s specifically designed to operate in the Microsoft ecosystem.

Whilst most LMS’s operate via a separate hosted system or portal, Learn365 is unique in that, just like Viva Learning, it delivers access to training from within Microsoft Teams. It also delivers learning from within SharePoint and a mobile app.

Those responsible for managing training can also track progress, create courses, and engage with students – all from within Microsoft 365.

It also fully supports Viva Learning.

Learn365 will give you the 6 following capabilities to compliment your Viva Learning experience:

  1. Building your own training content. In addition to supporting SCORM, xAPI, AICC, on-demand video and HTML5, Learn365 lets you build your own content using PDFs and many other types of documents such as Word, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets.
  2. Linking learning components into an end-to-end course. Learn365 lets you create your own end-to-end training programmes consisting of multiple learning modules. You can also create training that is of fully remote, hybrid and in-person training and hands-on exercises.
  3. Creating quizzes and checkpoints to test understanding. Using Learn365 and AI, you can create your own quizzes and checks for understanding at each key training point. Assessment by a trainer or observer can also be orchestrated using Learn365.
  4. Tracking of in-person learning components. Any training you have that is a mix of remote, virtual instructor led training (VILT) or fully classroom-based training can be tracked and reported on using Learn365.
  5. Professional development. Learn365 includes support for tracking Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for individuals participating in professional development activities. You can also allocate roles-based development based on a curriculum of learning components.
  6. Tracking progress, recording certifications and triggering annual renewals. Learn365 lets learning and development managers and line managers track and report on training progress and ensure certifications and other goals are met in line with business and compliance needs.

Conclusion

By combining Microsoft Viva Learning with Learn365, organisations can democratise learning whilst ‘injecting’ their own training content, structure and tracking where needed – all within the flow of work – be it learning remotely, learning by doing, or learning in the classroom.
